What kind of topics have I been interested in since I started researching D.S. Owen?

I became more interested in the Rev. D. S. Owen since I read 'City Mission' soon after learning his existence.
Afterwards, I spent some time looking for related articles in Welsh Newspapers and searching Google Books for books that referred to DS Owen.

A good number of articles were found while trawling through the articles related to the following;

• Eisteddfod (recitation)
• Football in Wales
• 'Caratacus' (school play)

I will write about football or 'Caratacus' in the next article (re-edited from a previously uploaded one).

The following two books were purchased (early on) because they seemed to have references to DS Owen.

• 'Caws Cardis and Cockneys' by Gwyneth Francis-Jones
• 'The Welsh in London　1500-2000' ed. by Emrys Jones

The former was a whole chapter about Jewin, and there was also quite a bit of mention of DS Owen.
The latter did not contain many references to DS Owen, only a picture including him that I had not seen before.
However, I became even more interested in the Welsh community in London and the people of Wales after reading the foreword.
I will write why later when I will mention the book in an article later (for now and here, just say, about the ’See England').

After reading these articles and books, and subsequently searching for further newspaper articles in the British News Paper Archive, as well as reading related books and other materials, including those not directly related to DS Owen, the following is areas of further interest.

• Liberalism / Liberal Party in Wales
• African Institute

There are also some names of interest around DS Owen.

• Emrys ap Iwan
• Beriah Gwynfe Evans
• John Morris-Jones
• David Lloyd George etc...

Of course, I have wanted to know about the following since we started researching DS Owen.

• Calvinistic Methodist/Presbyterian Church of Wales (Nonconformists)

I used to have virtually no knowledge of Wales, with only rugby, coal mining, male choir, the Welsh language and some myths and legends in my mind.
However, other than literature dealing with the Welsh language, some legends and folklore, DS Owen has little relevance to them as far as I have been able to find out.

I also had the impression from reading books published in the UK (mainly Welsh) that liberalism and nonconformist chapels were essential parts when thinking about Wales, but in the (few) books on Wales in Japan, they are rarely mentioned （I was under the impression that the nonconformists were only mentioned in the explanation of how they started men's choir and in connection with the disestablishment in Wales.
Moreover, there was no separate reference to each denomination within the nonconformist chapels, and there seemed to be some confusion in the use of the term 'Methodist'.
As for the Welsh community in London, there is only mention of the old Cymmrodorion.

The content of references to Eisteddfod is also slightly different, with DS Owen doing mainly a recitation.
There may be some major differences between the southern and northern parts of Wales, but I couldn't find much about this in the Japanese literature that I read...

Gradually, I started to research his life and hope to be able to write a bit of the history of Wales and the Welsh in London in connection with him, and I am continuing to do some bits and pieces of research.

Next time, as mentioned above, I will upload a re-edited version of my previous article on 'Caratacus' or football, but I'll see what happens...

DSオーウェンの存在を知り、"City Mission"を読んで気になる存在となり、その後しばらくはWelsh Newspapersで関連記事を探したり、Google BooksでDSオーウェンに言及のある本がないかを調べていました。

• アイステズボッド(朗唱)
• ウェールズにおけるサッカー
• 「カラタクス」(学校演劇)

次の記事でサッカーか「カラタクス」のことでも（以前アップしていた記事を再編集して）書こうと思っています。

言及がありそう、ということで（初期に）購入した本は以下2冊。

• Caws Cardis and Cockneys by Gwyneth Francis-Jones
• The Welsh in London　1500-2000 ed. by Emrys Jones

前者は1章まるまるJewinに関しての記述で、DSオーウェンについてもかなり言及がありました。
後者はDSオーウェンについてはあまり言及はなく、それまで見たことがなかった写真が載っていた程度でしたが、前書きを読んで、ロンドンのウェールズコミュニティや、ウェールズの人々に更に興味を持つように。
理由などはおいおい、この本について書く際にでも（ひとまずここでは、特にSee Englandのくだりを読んで、とだけ）。

これらの記事や本を読んだり、その後British News Paper Archiveでもさらに新聞記事を探したり、DSオーウェンとは直接関係ないものも含めて関連書籍等を読み、さらに気になったあたりが以下。

• ウェールズにおいての自由主義/自由党
• アフリカン・インスティテュート

またDSオーウェンの周りには気になる名前がちらほら。

• エムリス・アプ・イワン
• ブレア・グインフェ・エヴァンズ
• ジョン・モリス・ジョーンズ
• ロイド・ジョージ・・・

もちろん、以下についてはもっと知りたいと思っていました。

• カルヴァン派メソディスト/ウェールズ長老派（非国教派）

元々ウェールズに関する知識がほぼ皆無で、ラグビー、炭鉱、男声合唱、ウェールズ語、一部の伝説や伝承くらいしかイメージにありませんでした。
しかし、ウェールズ語、一部伝説や伝承を扱った文学以外については、私が調べた限りでは、DSオーウェンにはほとんど関連性がない。

また、UK（ウェールズ中心）の本などを読んでいると、自由主義と非国教派についてはウェールズを考えるうえで外せないものだという印象を受けていたのですが、日本で(数少ない)ウェールズを扱った本などではほとんど語られない？（合唱をするようになった経緯の説明と国教廃止運動に関してで非国教派教会が出てくる程度）という印象。
しかも、非国教派教会の中の各教派に分けて言及することはなく、「メソディスト」という言葉を使う際の混乱が見られるように感じました。

ロンドンのウェールズコミュニティに関しても、昔のカムロドリオンのことが触れられる程度。

アイステズボッドについても、DSオーウェンに関しては朗唱が中心であり、少しちがう。
南部と北部などで大きな違いなどもありそうながら、そのあたりについても私が読んだ範囲での日本語の文献ではあまりよくわからず…。

そして、徐々に彼の人生について調べていき、それと絡めて周辺のウェールズやロンドンのウェールズコミュニティの歴史を少しまとめられたらと思うようになり、引き続きボチボチと調べたりしているところです。

次回は先述の通り、カラタクスかサッカーについて、以前の記事を再編集したものをアップする予定ですがどうなることやら…。
