Early Life and Education
David Samuel Owen was born on 12 March 1887 at Ruthin, Denbighshire, Wales as a son of Samuel and Harriet Owen.Young David Samuel, his parents, and his younger brother Goronwy, who was born in 1889, attended 'Y Tabernacl', a Calvinistic Methodist chapel in Ruthin, when the Rev. Robert Ambrose Jones, also known as Emrys ap Iwan, was the minister.
David Samuel was educated in Rhos Street Board School in Ruthin which was established in the 1840s as part of the British and Foreign Society non-conformist backed movement.
The family moved to Abergele and then to Colwyn Bay.
After moving to Colwyn Bay, the Owen family attended Bethlehem Chapel in Lawson Road, Colwyn Bay near the new home of the family.
David Samuel and his brother were members of the Bethlehem Chapel Sunday School, and also they went to Abergele National School and Abergele County School.
David Samuel entered the University College of North Wales, Bangor, in 1905.
In 1907, he was present at the death of his younger brother who died of illness at just only 17 years old.
Although he took a degree in history (BA) in 1908, he stayed in the U.C.N.W. to take a further Welsh course under Professor John Morris Jones.
And then, he went to Aberystwyth Theological College from 1910 to 1913.

Twice Won Prizes in the National Eisteddfod
David Samuel was influenced by his parents, especially his mother, and worked hard as an elocutionist from a very young age.According to a few newspaper articles, although it is not clear how many people entered, he was in third place in a recitation contest for under 16 years olds of a local Calvinistic Methodists meeting at least when he was 4 years old.
After that, he also had competed in and has won prizes in a lot of recitation contests mainly in North Wales.
In 1899, he took part in the National Eisteddfod in Cardiff.
The test piece of that year was 'Ystorom Fellt' by Islwyn, and he remained in the three finalists for twenty-six entries, for all ages, and competed with two others both older than him in front of the audience at the Pavilion.
As a result, David Samuel, who was only 12, won the first prize and became one of the most popular people among the audience.
In 1901, at 14, he also competed in and won the National Eisteddfod in Merthyr Tydfil.
----
"Caratacus", the Welsh Historical Drama
In 1903, when David Samuel and his younger brother Goronwy were attending Abergele County School, the headmaster Jeremiah Williams, M.A. was dissatisfied with the lack of entertainment and education benefits of performing only the operettas and one or two scenes of Shakespeare plays that were seen at Christmas events in many schools at the time.He thought of creating a whole new Welsh historical play for his pupils and asked Beriah Gwynfe Evans, the author of the Welsh historical play he had seen before, to write the play and J.T. Rees, Mus. Bac., to compose some music including musical parts about Welsh hero Caratacus (usually called "Caradog" in Wales).
David Samuel, then 16 years old, was cast as the main character Caratacus, probably because of his career as a reciter, and Goronwy, 14, portrayed a "traitor", Vellocatus.
Although only two performances were planned at first, due to the popularity of the show, several more performances were held, including one in Colwyn Bay, the hometown of the Owen brothers.
In addition, there is a newspaper article that mentioned a person called "D.S. Owen, B.A." who played the role of Algernon Moncrieff in a performance of "The Importance of Being Earnest" performed by a party of amateurs for charity, at the Coliseum Theatre in Aberystwyth in 1912.
The person seems to be David Samuel. Because he was attending the Aberystwyth Theological College at that time and he was called "D.S. Owen, B.A." in newspaper articles mentioned him.
----
David Samuel had also entered recitation contests held here.
As a Sportsman, As a Football Player
David Samuel had been playing cricket and football since at least he was at Abergele County School. In this way, he also had an aspect as a sportsman.
In particular, David Samuel was a player so active in football that it was reported that many young football fans attended his service in a town when he was a student of the theological college and the young men enthusiastically listened to the sermon of "DS", whom they respected as a football player.
The details of how long he had been playing football are unclear, but there is an article that suggests that he was already highly regarded as a back at Colwyn Bay YMCA team in early 1905.
After entry to University College of North Wales, Bangor, he immediately took part in a football match and in his second year of the 1906 -1907 season he was captain of the U.C.N.W football team.
However, towards the end of the season, David Samuel was absent from football matches as his younger brother Goronwy’s condition became worse and died.
David Samuel played for the U.C.N.W. team as well as for the reserve team of Bangor City F.C., a club team based in Bangor.
Bangor Reserves won the 1st division of the North Wales Coast League in the 1907 – 1908 season.
In addition, U.C.N.W. joined the league only in the 1909-1910 season, the last season of David Samuel played for the university team, and won the championship.
Besides David Samuel, it seems there were not a few players in the U.C.N.W. team who belonged to Bangor Reserves or other club teams and had already had played at league matches.
David Samuel was a captain of the U.C.N.W. at least during the 1906-1907 and 1908-1909 season.
Also in the East v. West match of North Wales Coast League 1st Division in that season, two players of the U.C.N.W. were selected for the West, and David Samuel was captain of the team.
Thus, it seems David Samuel was a well-known player in North Wales Coast region at that time, and there is an article with an illustration captioned "DS Owen The 'Varsity Star".
And there are articles that suggest that the nickname "DS" was used to refer to David Samuel as a star football player at the time.
Incidentally, according to several articles, David Samuel had almost always played as right back.
In addition, he played for the U.C.N.W. team not only in the league matches of the 1909 -1910 season mentioned above but also when Bangor Reserve and the U.C.N.W. competed against each other in friendly matches in each season.
After leaving the U.C.N.W., David Samuel played for the Aberystwyth Theological College team from the 1910-1911 season to the 1912-1913 season.
However, few articles that mentioned David Samuel as a player of the theological college team, it is not known how often he played for the team.
In 1910, he also played a cup match as part of the local club Aberystwyth Town F.C. and won a match which he played.
However, the Aberystwyth Town F.C. were protested by the opponents that some university students and D. S. were not registered with the Welsh Association and were not qualified to play, and the result of the investigation that protest was correct, so the match was awarded for the opponent, and because it was a cup-tie, the team was not able to play the next match, and no article about football match D. S. appeared in has been found after that match.
As for cricket, he played in the off-season of football for teams of Abergele County School, U.C.N.W., and Bangor city club team and he undertook the captaincy of the county school team.

また、U.C.N.W.
