How did I start my research into D.S. Owen?

I write how I started researching into D.S. Owen before I will write notes.
(Before the renewal, I didn't write it, just what came to mind, so I decided to renew this blog.)

The first event, as I wrote in "About This Blog", was an interview with my favourite actor in which he mentioned his great-grandfather.
I was intrigued because I had become a fan of the actor because of his role as a priest from Gwynedd.

First of all, a google search using the keywords mentioned in the interview led to the official website of the Jewin Presbyterian Church of Wales.
Strictly speaking, it is the page within that website that describes the history of the church.

The page said as the following;

... This building was destroyed in the Blitz in 1940, and the building we see today was opened in 1960.
This ambitious rebuilding project was the vision of one man, the Revd D S Owen, who served as minister from 1915 to 1959.Eglwys Jewin (ca. 2013). A brief history of Jewin. Available at: https://www.capeljewin.org/history (Accessed: 15 April 2022).

The character played by the actor, whose great-grandson of D.S. Owen, was someone who spent his life rebuilding his cathedral, and this coincidental similarity made him even more intriguing to me.

Then, I found a book review on gwales.com, a bookshop run by The Welsh Books Council.
It is about the book "City Mission: The Story of London's Welsh Chapels" by Huw Edwards, which included the following sentence.

One of the most poignant illustrations in the book shows the Revd. D.S. Owen conducting a wedding ceremony in the ruins of a bombed-out Jewin in 1943 – even in ruin it was for its people a place like no other. Griffiths, R (ca. 2015). I bought the book as soon as I read this sentence and checked the photograph on arrival.
As the review says, it is a very striking one.

And the book seemed to have other photos of D.S. in it, so I opened the page to a portrait photo, which clearly shows his face.

Chapter 4, in which these photos appear, is entitled 'Journey to Jewin' and describes the history of Jewin, with a large proportion of the chapter devoted to the years of the ministry of the Rev. D.S. Owen.

The book says that the Rev. D.S. Owen was appointed minister of Jewin in 1915, at the age of 28. I was delighted by the coincidence, as 28 was the same age that the character played by his great-grandson became prior of a priory under the cathedral that he was to rebuild (at least in the original novel).

Although I was only surprised that my favourite actor had a great-grandfather who had something in common with his role, and I wanted to know a little about the person at first, after reading the book, D.S. Owen started to become more than that to me.

Firstly, it was again a personal reason, as I felt an affinity with D.S. after reading the testimony by Geraint Pritchard, D.S. Owen's grandson and an elder of Jewin at the time. (For various reasons, D.S. reminded me of my own grandfather.)

I then used the Dictionary of Welsh Biography to get basic information about him, while looking for newspaper articles in Welsh Newspapers and the British News Paper Archive, and books about D.S. and Jewin.

Meanwhile, I was made to realise that I knew nothing about the things and people surrounding D.S., that the views of Wales (at least as it is generally known in my country) are only small parts of it, and that there is much that is unknown and untold about what is involved with D.S. (again, at least in my country).
Then, I began to think that some of them might be important things to know about Wales.

（リニューアル前はこれを書かないままに、ただ思いついたことを書いていたので、ブログ記事を新たに書き直すことにしました。）

最初のきっかけはAbout This Blogに書いたとおり、私の好きな俳優がインタビューで彼の曽祖父に言及していたことでした。
私がその俳優のファンになったきっかけがグウィネズ出身の聖職者の役であったため、興味をひかれたのです。

まずはそのインタビューに書かれていたキーワードでgoogle検索をしたところ、Jewinウェールズ長老教会の公式ウェブサイトがヒットしました。
厳密に言えば、その中の、Jewinの歴史について書かれたページです。

このページには以下のような記載がありました。

... この建物は1940年のロンドン大空襲で破壊され、現在の建物は1960年にオープンしたものです。この意欲的な再建プロジェクトは、1915年から1959年まで牧師を務めたD.S.オーウェン師という一人の人物の構想によるものでした。Eglwys Jewin (ca. 2013). A brief history of Jewin. Available at: https://www.capeljewin.org/history (Accessed: 15 April 2022).

私がDSオーウェンの曾孫である俳優が演じたキャラクターは彼の大聖堂を再建することに生涯を費やした人物で、その偶然の共通点にDSにさらに興味を惹かれました。

次に、The Welsh Books Councilが運営しているブックショップgwales.com掲載されている書評を見つけました。

ヒュー・エドワーズ（Huw Edwards）さん著"City Mission: The Story of London's Welsh Chapels"についての書評で、その中に、以下のような一文がありました。

この本の中で最も印象的な図像の一つは、1943年に爆撃で破壊され廃墟となったJewinで結婚式を執り行うD.S.オーウェン師を写したものだ。廃墟であっても、人々にとっては他とは代えがたい場であった。Griffiths, R (ca. 2015). Gwales Review, 'City Mission - The Story of London's Welsh Chapels'.

この一文を読んですぐにこの本を買い求め、到着後にこの写真を確認しました。
レビューにある通り、非常に印象的な写真です。

そしてその本には他にもDSさんの写真が掲載されているようだったので、そのページを開くと、はっきりと顔がわかる、ポートレート写真が掲載されていました。

これらの写真が掲載されている第4章は"Journey to Jewin"という章題で、Jewinの歴史について書かれており、その中の多くの割合をDSが牧師を務めた時代の記述に割いています。

1915年、28歳の時にDSがJewinの牧師に就任したと書かれており、28歳という年齢は、曾孫が演じたキャラクターが、(少なくとも原作小説では)彼が再建することになる大聖堂の修道院長になったのと同じ年齢であったため、またしてもその偶然の一致に喜びました。

このように最初はあくまで俳優のファンになったきっかけである役柄と共通点がある曽祖父がいたことに驚き、この人物について少し知りたいと思っていた程度でしたが、この本を読んだことにより、DSオーウェンがそれ以上に存在になり始めたのです。

まずは、DSオーウェンの孫で当時のJewinの長老でもあったゲラント・プリチャードさんによる証言を読んでDSさんに親近感を覚えたという、これまた個人的な理由でした（諸々の理由から、私に自分の祖父を思い起こさせた）。

その後Dictionary of Welsh Biographyで基本的な情報を入手しつつ、Welsh NewspapersやBritish News Paper Archiveで新聞記事を探したり、DSやJewinについて書かれている本を探したりしていました。
その中で自分がDSを取り巻く事柄や人物について何も知らず、そして(少なくとも私の国で一般に知られている)ウェールズのイメージというのはごく一部のものでDSに関わることについては知られていない・語られていない部分も多く、しかしその中にはウェールズ知る上で重要なものもあるのではないかということを考え始めました。
